Fences on Broadway has already received some rave reviews and it has barely been open a couple for days. Fences tickets are selling fast as news travels about this unique play, set in Pittsburgh. The touching tale of the once talented athlete who hit the skids running unravels onstage in an urban backyard onstage, and has garnered much early praise for its strength of character and casting. Here are some of the things that the Broadway critics have said about the play this week.
Ben Brantley of the New York Times, had this to say about the production that is turning so many heads at the moment:
“There are scenes as vivid and heartfelt as any on Broadway now.”
“When Denzel Washington talks about challenging death to a wrestling match, you suddenly sense that everything’s going to be all right.”
“Mr. Washington and Ms. Davis prove that lovers don’t have to be as young and star-crossed as Romeo and Juliet to generate shiver-making heat and pathos.”
Brendan Lemon, of the Financial Times (London) also enjoyed the tension between the main actors, and noted that, “Washington has the challenge on stage of acting opposite Davis. As Meryl Streep found out in the film of ‘Doubt,’ you have to be on top of your game with this performer or you will be left inhaling dust. … Like this production at its best, she is an attractive combination of tough and tender.”
Chris Jones of the Chicago Tribune predicted success for Fences on Broadway succinctly, when he said, “[Director Kenny] Leon and Washington have hit a collective home run.”
