Fences Tony Nominee Speaks About His Pride

As Fences tickets continue to be a smash hit on Broadway, modest musician Branford Marsalis has been talking about his surprise when nominated for a Tony Award. The saxophonist and composer has already won 3 Grammy’s, so he shouldn’t have been too stunned, but his nomination for Best Original Score is making him beam with pride. Marsalis’ music, composed for the acclaimed play starring Denzel Washington, has brought playwright August Wilson’s Fences alive for New York audiences. August Wilson’s Broadway hit is really pulling in the stars now, but its own stars aren’t forgetting where the whole thing came from in the first place. Fences tickets have been sold out for every performance on Broadway and its 10 Tony nominations are proof of how good this show really is. Among the celebrities who’ve turned out to see the play starring Denzel Washington and Viola Davis are Color Purple producer Oprah Winfrey. Oprah was seen at the Cort Theatre with her friend Gayle King recently, and they looked like they were having a great time.

Meanwhile, one of the Fences stars has paid tribute to playwright August Wilson for creating the play in the first place. Stephen McKinley Henderson, who earned a 2010 Tony nominee for playing a fantastic Jim Bono (friend of Trot Maxson), spoke recently about his excitement on learning he’d received his first Tony nomination.

“It just thrilled me,” Henderson said. “It thrilled me to get the nomination, but it always is about August. It’s always about what a privilege it was to work with him while he was here and how overjoyed he would be with this production of Fences. I mean, I know he would really be thrilled with it. And, the ten nominations. I mean, ten nominations! It’s such a wonderful company to be a part of, so I just feel so blessed.”

Fences isn’t Henderson’s Broadway debut; he was one of the original cast of Wilson’s King Hedley II plus he appeared in the revival of Wilson’s Ma Rainey’s Black Bottom, and Drowning Crow, and Dracula the Musical. Henderson praised the progressive nature of the New York theater scene and spoke of his happiness that actress Marian Seldes is to be honored with a Lifetime Achievement Award this year. “That means so much to me, I cannot tell you,” Henderson said, “because she was such a wonderful, inspiring light when I came to New York in 1968. And, so, to be able to be at the Tonys this year when they’re going to honor her lifetime achievement just adds to the whole thing.” He added that he was immensely pleased and proud that the Eugene O’Neill Playwrights Center, where August Wilson got his chance at the big time, is central to many of the playwrights and actors involved in Broadway theater since the late-60s. Little did he dream how well Fences tickets would sell for this 2010 Broadway revival.

Fences tickets sales are indeed driving recognition of the play as a great work, but there’s a whole arm of American theater history pushing those Fences tickets into the hands of those who seek them. His current success at the Cort Theater has given Henderson a renewed appetite for the stage and its history. He also gave a shout out to all the people who’d nurtured his talent and paved the way for this Tony Award nomination in 2010.

“I have been acting a long time,” he said, “and it has to do with tradition. It just has to do with the heritage of theater and all those people who believed in me when I was really young and who encouraged me and sometimes bailed me out. . . . The Tony represents the legacy and the heritage of theater. It’s old school and it’s current at the same time, and that’s what this means to me.”

This current Broadway revival of Fences is creating a buzz rarely seen on the Great White Way in recent years. Denzel Washington’s sterling performance as Troy Maxson is a big part of it, but the truth is that the entire cast of Fences are selling tickets like nothing around. Fences tickets owe their success to several things, such as the way the stark but informative set bares Washington and Viola Davis to the fore amid the wreck of their lives. Race is the theme here, and it has really launched the production to a wider radius. The composition of Fences ticket buyers is said to be approximately half African-American and half white, which is a change from most of August Wilson’s other plays. In fact, Wilson has a reputation as a playmaker with a difference; his most likely target audience, and the adaptability of his awesome creations to the silver screen, have both been noted for their low response in a culture obsessed with identity and celluloid.

This time, however, African-Americans are drawn to the charisma oozed by Denzel Washington and are equaling white theatergoers in number, but we have yet to see a single one of Wilson’s celebrated (and cerebral) tales transferred to the medium of film. It’s not surprising that black America has missed out on Wilson’s work; African-Americans are jaded by endless pop-culture versions of their existence that succeed only in shrinking their window of representation. The African-American experience has suffered neglect both on the stage and in movie theaters, because even in the limelight their complex destiny is only allowed so much freedom; any drama becomes a comedy, any neighborhood a gang-blighted urban hellbroth, and any individual defined by rigid limits on personality and expression. The one exception to this is Will Smith, an actor who has enjoyed superstardom while circumventing the trappings of being a famous black man. Indeed, Denzel Washington has a foot in both worlds, and it is fitting that it is he who has brought out the crowds in the correct ratio to see Fences on Broadway. What’s the betting that, should Fences tickets ever be sold in cinemas, it’ll be Mr. Smith in the title role? Will Smith would suit the charismatic dialogues of Wilson’s world, but would he drag the mood down – or up? – to a place that was no longer personal enough to do justice to an August Wilson drama? Perhaps Denzel Washington is the perfect fit for the role; smaller and less obvious than James Earl Jones, Hollywood enough (but without the bubblegum of the Fresh Prince) to sell Fences tickets to a large audience, and indeed serious enough as an actor to make it a movie worth nominating for the biggest prize of all. Speaking of which, Fences recently received ten Tony Award nominations in the Best Revival, Best Actor, Best Actress and other categories, including Best Lighting (for that brilliant set). This is obviously a play that is going places, and Fences Broadway tickets will not be gathering moss. Fences on Broadway is the one they’re talking about right now, and it’s the play that is changing the composition of Broadway’s theater audiences through star power and realism.

Fences tickets are the big ticket of the moment on Broadway, make no mistake about that. Denzel Washington’s Troy Maxson is a complex construction, and one that will remain with those who see it for a long time. The previous star of this production, James Earl Jones, was a more sudden effect (due to his imposing size) but Hollywood’s Denzel brings something else to the stage – deliberation and revelation, of a character’s present as well as his past. Audiences have been described as “diverse” at Fences on Broadway, but there is surely something radical and curious in the minds of them all that unites and illuminates. Fences is, after all, a play about race, about racism and the ways life’s obstacles can drag a great man down. But is Troy Maxson – was Troy Maxson – ever a great man, anyway? Buy Fences tickets and find out.

Fences Broadway is the quintessential August Wilson play, the one in which his protagonist talks about “challenging death to a wrestling match”, the one where an African-American man swings a baseball bat menacingly, live before your eyes. Or does he? The answer is yes and no. It’s all symbolic and somehow ultra-real at the same time. A lot of audience members at Fences shows have probably never witnessed the type of brutality and violence that was an everyday fact of Troy Maxson’s life, much of it self-inflicted, and in this they are assured a realistic glimpse into another world. It is at the very least a glimpse over one’s backyard fence into the raging heart of one’s neighbor. Fences author August Wilson wanted to bring to the world the reality of millions of faceless people, living all over the USA (not just in the prejudiced South) and he succeeded marvelously with Fences.
Tickets have been 100% sold out during the first week of the production. It is a grim curiosity that drives this audience on. With Washington in the title role, we have a strange twist to a bleak drama; the crowd is finding it hard to dislike Denzel, their Denzel, for he is a household name and even a sex symbol. But what he also is is a dangerous and angry man, living life as a nobody in the melee that was 1950s Pittsburgh, and this is something for audiences to sink their teeth into. The set of Fences is subtle artistry, from Santo Loquasto (designer) and Brian MacDevitt (lighting). One could almost liken it to a Hollywood set, such is the accuracy of the objects involved. Set in Maxson’s backyard, there is a tantalizing view into the kitchen, from where a gritty glow emanates and informs us of its owners’ ground-floor budget. The set is worth the price of Fences tickets alone.

Maxson is a former Negro League baseball player, a man who once enjoyed adulation and respect for his skill as an athlete. Washington’s Maxson is an elegant beast, and this adds to the sense of sudden mood swings, and an out of focus grip on life and its economic demands, which is unfortunate for Maxson’s wife and children, with whom he shares a rocky existence. James Earl Jones was Darth Vader but Denzel Washington was Steve Biko – and this difference flavors the current Fences Broadway production; where Jones was a titan, a mountainous muscleman with a lion’s voice, Washington is a wily panther with a telling gleam in his eye, a gleam that tells you to watch the hell out, ‘cos there’s one mean cat around. Viola Davis provides an excellent vision of a shrunken wife, worn down by years of pain and anger, and her part in this is to bring a near-silent but immovable object. She’s obviously made the decision to stick around, and as their life conditions unroll it is easy to see that she has no choice. I don’t want to spoil it for you if you are shopping for Fences on Broadway tickets, but suffice it to say that Fences tickets are a passport into a world where people have been made smaller than they should be, where spreading one’s wings might mean violence rather than flight. Come to see Fences on Broadway and wallow in the gray moonlight where there is no gray area, there is only the stark reality of Pittsburgh’s Hill District in the 1950s. Absolutely gripping and not to be missed.

Fences on Broadway has already received some rave reviews and it has barely been open a couple for days. Fences tickets are selling fast as news travels about this unique play, set in Pittsburgh. The touching tale of the once talented athlete who hit the skids running unravels onstage in an urban backyard onstage, and has garnered much early praise for its strength of character and casting. Ben Brantley of the New York Times, had this to say about the production that is turning so many heads at the moment:
